Paddle down the Swan River Estuary within the Moulting Lagoon Protected Wetland for the most authentic and interactive Oyster Tasting you will ever experience! This tour begins and ends from Point Meredith (only a 15 minute drive from the town center of Coles Bay) with a 30-40 min lunch break at MelShell Oyster Shack for lunch. This tour requires about 6 km of paddling total (about 1 hour each way) to reach MelShell Oyster Shack and return to our tour staring point. This should be considered for groups with children or those with very minimal water sport experience.
The Moulting Lagoon is world recognized as a protected wetland/bird sanctuary and can only be deeply explored by paddling down it! During this tour, you will inevitably paddle past pelicans, black swans, sea eagles, herons, oyster catchers, gannets, terns and many other native seabirds. Along the way you will pass by local oyster farms and your tour guide will share in depth knowledge about how this food source is grown, harvested, and sold locally. Oyster farming is one of the most sustainable and ecofriendly industries in the world and witnessing these techniques up close and personal will make your lunch taste even better! After seeing and learning about the oyster farming process along the river, we will pull up to MelShell Oyster Shack so you can try the product for yourself! During the paddle back from lunch you will take in the views of the entire Freycinet Peninsula from a unique angle and see the Hazards Mountain range from a completely different perspective all while looking out for sting rays, seals and other marine life. An unbeatable and uniquely authentic Tasmanian experience.
The tour includes stable double sea kayaks, all paddling equipment, experienced guides, 1/2 dozen oyster tasting and a soft drink. Tours are 3 hours in length and depart Monday-Friday at 1:00pm. No experience necessary, moderate level of fitness required. This tour requires approximately 2 hours of leisurely paddling all together to be able to reach (and return from) MelShell Oyster Shack.
